Our commitment

ASHES wants everybody to be able to find the music and get to a show. This site is built to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

What that means here

  • Every piece of text on the site has been measured against the exact background it sits on, and meets or beats the 4.5:1 contrast ratio for body text and 3:1 for large text and interface elements.
  • The whole site can be operated with a keyboard alone, and every focusable control shows a visible focus ring.
  • There is a skip link to the main content as the first thing in the tab order.
  • Every meaningful image carries descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Headings run in order and describe the content beneath them, so a screen reader user can navigate by structure.
  • Every form field has a real, visible label attached to it.
  • All motion, including the video on the front page, stops entirely when your device is set to reduce motion. The video is muted, never plays audio, and nothing on the site plays sound on its own.
  • No content is hidden behind an animation. If scripts fail or are blocked, the whole site still reads.
  • Every standalone control (buttons, navigation links, form fields, the menu) is at least 44 pixels on its smaller side. The mailing-list tick box is 24 pixels, but its whole label is clickable, which makes the real target 44 pixels tall. Links sitting inside a sentence take their size from the text, which is the documented exception for inline links.

No accessibility overlay

This site does not use an accessibility overlay, toolbar or widget. Those products have been shown to create new barriers rather than remove them. Conformance here is built into the page itself.

Known limitations

  • The embedded Spotify player and the YouTube video player are supplied by those companies. We cannot change how they behave for assistive technology. If either gives you trouble, the same music is reachable through the direct Spotify and Apple Music links, and every one of those services has its own accessibility support.
  • The photo strip scrolls sideways. It can be moved with the keyboard, and no information exists only inside it.
